Task 5- Newsstand Analysis

The magazines are lined up side by side, but mainly behind each other, denying the whole view of the magazine behind the first. You are able to see the lower left third, which sometimes includes the barcode, date, issue number, part of the masthead and a few coverlines. This then allows the by-passer to pick up the magazine and read the coverlines, the buzz words/sentences and look at the main images. All of the different magazines are laid out. One thing that caught my eye when taking the photo was that XXL magazine was at the back, but I knew straight away that the magazine was XXL, due to the colour scheme and the masthead. This enabled me to pick it up confidently, knowing the brand name of the magazine. This is a boost to the readership and the magazine’s profit, as new readers may pick up a new, certain magazine and the magazine (e.g: XXL) would increase their audience numbers. The layout via colour is a little bit messy, as there is no co-ordination, but once a magazine is on the shelf, who cares. Just as long as someone's favourite magazine is on the shelf. Most of these magazine that are shown have their magazine online through their own website. This broadens the readership and people who don't want to buy it can easily access it at home. For the younger audience, they can access value added content on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Also, music magazines can have YouTube channels, where the audience can view other value added content such as interviews and access that music magazines can get when they attend concerts/gigs and write about them.
