`Task 9- My Journalistic Text
Dorian
Santos is a Hip Hop Rapper and singer. He was born and raised in the streets of
Hackney. He has been around music for two years and is due to release his first
mixtape, ‘Time Will Tell’. We speak to him in an exclusive interview as he
opens up to his early life, his work with a major artist and his completion of
his first mixtape.
What
generated your passion for music?
I listened to a lot of music, watched a lot of
music videos, which inspired me to make music and try to film a video for one
of my songs. It felt like a true norm to start making music and I got this
conformation from my parents as well as teachers in my secondary school. I
started rapping when I was 14 and started writing when I was 15. At 16, I was
performing for my school’s leavers’ assembly. I also found out that I had the
talent to sing, which was a slight amazement, but it also caught the attention of
girls, which seemed to be a bonus.
Who
is your inspiration and why?
My
inspiration seems to be Tupac. His music was sensational and he was mainly a
true artist. His words ‘spoke volumes’ and it had a huge impact on the way I
conducted myself in society. I also look up to August Alsina. Although I am a
few years younger than him, I still believe he can be an inspiration. He has
been through hard times, and has managed to pull through, releasing his album
‘Testify’. Listening to the whole album made me change my whole writing style.
I stopped talking about my dreams and started to talk about my thoughts and
visions.
Who
gave you the most help in creating ‘Time Will Tell’?
Time Will
Tell should become a success, hopefully! Let’s just say my mother was the most
help. Although she never helped on the productive side, she raised me. I have
to give thanks to God first, as none of this would happen if I didn’t have
faith in him. I wouldn’t be sitting here with UpBeat talking about a mixtape of
my own, so thanks to God. I also thank my manager, productive team and special
thanks to ReggieBeatz, for producing one of my best songs on the mixtape.
“Music is Knowledge, Knowledge is Power, The Power to shine...”
We’ve
been told that someone is looking to feature you on tour with them! Who would
this person be?
I don’t want to give much away, but it is true.
I’ll be heading on tour with someone. It is a UK tour, heading to Manchester,
Birmingham and hometown, London o2. The artist is well known in the music
industry and it is a delight to work with them.
What
song would you rate the best from ‘Time Will Tell’?
What is my
best song on the mixtape! I think every song is as equal as each other. This is
a hard question, but I can say that I like ‘Angels Fly’. It just has this Hip
Hop buzz and it was produced by ReggieBeatz. He was very fun to work with. I
think working with Wretch 32 was one of my true highlights. He was heavily
interested in my music style and was keen to write and perfect the song.
Hackney and Tottenham artist equals perfection! Music is knowledge and knowledge
is power. My music gives me the power to shine.

Task 9 Progress of contents page
I feel like the contents page of my magazine is coming
along. Slight adjustments will need to be made, for example, whether to have a background
image on the B side, similar to what the A side has. This may have its advantages
but it may also have disadvantages. I also know that I need to add in page
numbers for the contents page, which links in with the flat plan idea. I have
decided to give out the twitter name as I believe that Twitter is a media site
mostly used and can interact with fans/readers easier than Facebook. I have
changed my colour scheme from black, white and yellow to black, white and red. I
have been told that yellow may seem slightly childlike and very bright. Red is
also used in the magazine XXL, so it seems to be a popular yet reliable colour
to have in a magazine. Following the conventions of my colour scheme, I have
added colour outlines to the words “regulars” and “features, for them to stand
out more that “the A-side” and “the B-side”. It also stands out totally different
to the rest of the text. The picture on the “A-side” (especially the rose)
again, links in with my colour co-ordination of my contents page. My pictures
on the B-side will soon contain page numbers that will link to the features
/regulars included in the contents page. I will also look to increase the font
size of the page numbers, so that my audience are able to see clearly where my
articles are to be located.

Task 9 Progress of contents page
Slight changes have been made to my contents page. The font colour of my writing has changed from black to yellow with a black outline. For my Coverlines, they have also changed to a white colour with a black outline. Furthermore, I have changed the words "Features" and "Regulars" from the colour white to the colour black, with an italic font.

Task 8- Picture From My Photography
These are some of the picture that I have taken today at Gladesmore Community School in North London. They feel very music linked, as we have talented up and coming musicians in the studio and on the piano.

Task 8- Contact Sheet
These are just a variety of what photos I have taken. I am looking to use these pictures in my contents page as well as my DPS. However, I still need to get my front page image in my location pictured, so I will start working on my contents page (which links to my house style and flat plan) and continue with my DPS plan, as I wait to complete my front page image.

Task 7- Audience Feedback From Magazine Presentation
From the comments I have received, my magazine presentation
was really good as I included colour scheme possibilities as well as masthead
possibilities. This seems positive, as my audience gather an understanding of
the stages it took for me to choose which possibilities will suit my magazine.
I gave them an understanding as to why the title ‘UpBeat’ was chosen. I felt
like the research to find my magazine publishers was efficient, as I made sure
what other music magazine my chosen publishers published and where they were
based. I also included the main things that will be in my magazine, through the
contents page. My house style that has been set up is an idea of how my real
magazine’s front cover, contents page and DPS layout will look like. Unfortunately,
I did not include my flat plan, which let me down, but as I continue to
progress with it, I know where my adverts will be placed, what adverts will be
placed inside my magazine and what other articles will be placed in my magazine
apart form the main DPS I will be creating.
One question that was given to me was; what is the reason
for my magazine to cost £2.49. From my research, I had seen that some music
magazines cost £1.99. Furthermore, I have also seen magazines that have cost
£2.99 and above. This gave me the initiative to pick the middle price that was in
between £1.99 - £2.99. I didn’t want to choose any higher than £2.99, (picking
prices such as £3.49 or £3.99), which is the reason why I chose £2.49 as the
price of my magazine. This isn’t a proper example of psychological pricing as
£2.49 doesn’t make the audience think that they are paying £2 instead of a
penny off £3. But it still seems like it is psychological pricing as it makes
you think that you are not paying £2.50, but you are actually paying a penny
less.
Another question that was asked was if there will be an
E-Zine version of my magazine. There will not be an E-Zine version of my
magazine. Although my magazine is aimed at young teenagers, I still want to see
how many ‘Loyal’ readers would actually pay £2.49 for my magazine. Again, I
know that young people use the internet but I am also thinking about profit,
and in this society, there are many ways to pass-by payments of things, which
wouldn’t be an advantage to my magazine as well as the publishers profit. Overall,
from my knowledge and the comments I have received about my presentation, I
believe it was of a good standard.

Task 5- Newsstand Analysis
The magazines are lined up side by side, but mainly behind each other, denying the whole view of the magazine behind the first. You are able to see the lower left third, which sometimes includes the barcode, date, issue number, part of the masthead and a few coverlines. This then allows the by-passer to pick up the magazine and read the coverlines, the buzz words/sentences and look at the main images. All of the different magazines are laid out. One thing that caught my eye when taking the photo was that XXL magazine was at the back, but I knew straight away that the magazine was XXL, due to the colour scheme and the masthead. This enabled me to pick it up confidently, knowing the brand name of the magazine. This is a boost to the readership and the magazine’s profit, as new readers may pick up a new, certain magazine and the magazine (e.g: XXL) would increase their audience numbers. The layout via colour is a little bit messy, as there is no co-ordination, but once a magazine is on the shelf, who cares. Just as long as someone's favourite magazine is on the shelf. Most of these magazine that are shown have their magazine online through their own website. This broadens the readership and people who don't want to buy it can easily access it at home. For the younger audience, they can access value added content on social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Also, music magazines can have YouTube channels, where the audience can view other value added content such as interviews and access that music magazines can get when they attend concerts/gigs and write about them.

Task 4- Evaluation for Feedback on College Magazine
From the feedback I received, what went well for my college
magazine was that I used the same font which makes it easier for my target
audience to read. It was appropriate, as the text was clear and the colour of
the text was eye catching. The colour scheme was appropriate and it slightly
suitable for my college magazine, which does catch the eye of some of my
audience. From one of my peer’s feedback, I was told that my colour choice wasn’t
the best, as it was too bright and it took away the attention of the purpose of
the text. The magazine is really suitable to my audience and it is very
eye-catching. From one of my peer’s, there has been lots of effort made. It has
the purpose to inform my audience about college life and what kind of gossip is
out there, in college. Through my feedback, I have been told that it does link
to my target audience as it is based on college life and not anything else. The
teasers, coverlines and images all link to the purpose of my magazine. It has
some slight use of buzz words, to create a sense of urge to turn the page and
read the article. Again, my images are very suitable and link back to my
magazine. My pictures were carefully taken and chosen, and they all had a
purpose behind it, not just to look good on the page. My Photoshop skills have
developed slowly but gradually, as my finishing product was mainly positive. I will
be looking forward to using the proper cameras instead of my phone camera, as
the definition of the picture should be exquisite due to such high quality of a
camera. My layout of my contents page is simple, but not too hard to figure out
where things are. I used buzz words, a skyline and many coverlines, linking to
college and my audience. I need to improve on the consistency of my font use,
as I used a range to show which parts of the magazine had more importance and
purpose.
3 key points for development when producing main task:
1.
Try to plan out my use of colours before I start
making my magazine, by sketching out my plan first.
2.
Try to make more of a complex layout for my
content page, instead of making my double page spread and front page look
immense and leaving the content page dull.
3.
Try to make a foundation plan, by making some Photoshop
covers to see which one I may go with and develop further.

Task 4- Audience Feedback Questions
Question for audience feedback on my college magazine
1. What do you think of the fonts being used?
2. Is the colour scheme appropriate?
3. Overall thought about the magazine?
4. Does it relate to my target audience (16-19 Year olds)
5. Are my images suitable to my magazine and do they link to the coverlines?
