Case Study Textual Analysis Notes

·         The Skyline of a magazine is at the top of the magazine, which is used for additional information, e.g: Freebies, Competitions or Cover lines.
·         The bottom right of the magazine is usually where the barcode, magazine issue, price, branding and date is.
·         Federal Express use Cryptic for their logo. You can see the arrow pointing towards the end of the logo ‘FedEx’, made by the two letters (E and X)
·
Anchorage is when meaning is fixed and it will back up the text and the image further

Vibe Analysis
·         Audience is 18 to 35 year olds, male predominantly.
·         Masthead is the text (Vibe is the masthead as it is the title)
·         The masthead has to be the largest font on the magazine front cover.
·         A long shot (LS) of Ciara has been taken, as she is the main model image and for men, all eyes will be on this model, as she is seen as a sexual object, due to most men’s interest.
·         Teasers will be on the side of the magazine to grab attention to by-passers, who may glimpse the magazine.
·         Vibe is universally recognised, so if a letter or two is being covered by the main image, people are still aware of the brand of the magazine.

Task 1- Production Schedule

Evaluation of Induction Assignment

During my induction assignment, I enjoyed the topic given to us. I found some of the designing parts quite difficult, as it was my first time using designing software called InDesign. At first, I found the research method difficult, as I didn’t know where to start, however as the time progressed, the research started flowing more efficiently. My strengths were finding facts and statistics as well as understanding the depth of the topic. This is because I didn’t have much knowledge into piracy and I learnt as I progressed in writing my journalistic piece.

During the summer, I did work experience for a youth magazine and published a few articles and with this experience, I felt confident during the writing section. I had some experience in style of writing and layout of what I write. I’ve also learnt to be sure with the research I have and make sure that the information is legit. I believe that my writing could have been slightly better, but I am getting used to writing again, so hopefully during my coursework, I can produce outstanding work. I believe that this was a weakness of mine, but can be worked on very easily.

Although I love media, I am not a fan of designing. InDesign was going to be a challenge, as it were my first time. Similar to Photoshop, InDesign took some time for me to get used to. My strengths were that I took down notes, so I could use it as a guide to follow when working independently. I used my peers and my teachers as back-up in case I was totally stuck, but apart from that, I used my notes. I was happy with my final product, but had some trouble finding a background colour for my title, as InDesign offers a limited amount of colours. I have learnt the layout of a magazine and the size we should use for our font, when exporting our article onto InDesign. Furthermore, I have learnt what some of the tools are used for, how to add images from the internet and how to and colour to the background of my whole article. Creating my blog was slightly problematic but at the end of my hold backs, I was happy to have my blog up and running. This enables me to start added my media work to it and the progress I have made during the course. It will come in handy if I want to add some of my originals pieces. For example, if I have written a review, I would like to add this on my blog at a later stage. Some of my problems was that the internet failed me every time I tried to login to Gmail. Also, putting in a URL for my blog was a disadvantage as it kept on informing me it was in the wrong form. Finally, I had trouble trying to upload my article on my blog, but now, this problem has been solved.

The feedback I received was positive. People said it looked very good and quite convincing. It was big and bold and my images were suitable. I needed to range out my colours, as I was told designs usually have 3 main colours and not 2. My colour needs to connote my audience and green wasn’t doing that successfully. My targets is to make sure my double page spread suits my audience, use 3 or more colours and also explain the statistics rather than just having an image by itself.

Double Page Spread- Music Piracy

By Tyrell Willock

Piracy is a big issue in our society. With new media in our society and quick, sufficient access of the web, the majority of us turn to the internet, enabling us to download music illegally.

There are different reasons why people download music illegally. One of these reasons is that downloading online is free and less time consuming. Obviously, in this day and age, we wouldn’t find someone walk into a CD store and buy an album worth £12.99, when we are now able to download the same album, for free! People often spend (on average) around £120 on 3 video games but wouldn’t waste a penny on an album that they can download. A lot of people like the word ‘free’. If everything in the world were free, the world would break apart; we would become less motivated and lazier. Unfortunately, we do not live in a world like this, although we do have some lazy people in our society. But let’s not jump off topic.

I may be ashamed to say this, but out of the 8 million people who downloaded Ed Sheeran’s album ‘X’, I was one of them. This isn’t because I didn’t have enough money to buy his album, but because it wasn’t time consuming and I wanted his album on the go. According to a BBC Radio 1 interview, Ed Sheeran said that he still sells gig tickets for “relatively more than he does albums”.  We are told that on average, he sells his albums for £8 and his gig tickets for £18. From my research, I have found that as an artist, it is important not to just rely on album sales, but to also sell merchandises or do festivals and gigs. This will create much profit for the artist, as more money is coming in for someone who does more things around music. It seems like the norm to just download music. We don’t realise this, but we download content every single day and we use these contents for our needs.

In my opinion, I agree that piracy is destroying the music industry but at the same time, it isn’t. According to documentary on YouTube ‘Face the Music’, in the past, people used to take albums, burn the CD, photocopy the album cover and sell the album. I understand that this is a form of piracy, but this happened on a regular basis, so it was harder to stop. If people didn't have money to buy a CD, this type of method would be used to pirate music. In the same way, I don’t believe that it’s a crime, as music is for everyone. Once something is out in the media, it is very hard to regain it back.
