Evaluation of Induction Assignment

During my induction assignment, I enjoyed the topic given to us. I found some of the designing parts quite difficult, as it was my first time using designing software called InDesign. At first, I found the research method difficult, as I didn’t know where to start, however as the time progressed, the research started flowing more efficiently. My strengths were finding facts and statistics as well as understanding the depth of the topic. This is because I didn’t have much knowledge into piracy and I learnt as I progressed in writing my journalistic piece.

During the summer, I did work experience for a youth magazine and published a few articles and with this experience, I felt confident during the writing section. I had some experience in style of writing and layout of what I write. I’ve also learnt to be sure with the research I have and make sure that the information is legit. I believe that my writing could have been slightly better, but I am getting used to writing again, so hopefully during my coursework, I can produce outstanding work. I believe that this was a weakness of mine, but can be worked on very easily.

Although I love media, I am not a fan of designing. InDesign was going to be a challenge, as it were my first time. Similar to Photoshop, InDesign took some time for me to get used to. My strengths were that I took down notes, so I could use it as a guide to follow when working independently. I used my peers and my teachers as back-up in case I was totally stuck, but apart from that, I used my notes. I was happy with my final product, but had some trouble finding a background colour for my title, as InDesign offers a limited amount of colours. I have learnt the layout of a magazine and the size we should use for our font, when exporting our article onto InDesign. Furthermore, I have learnt what some of the tools are used for, how to add images from the internet and how to and colour to the background of my whole article. Creating my blog was slightly problematic but at the end of my hold backs, I was happy to have my blog up and running. This enables me to start added my media work to it and the progress I have made during the course. It will come in handy if I want to add some of my originals pieces. For example, if I have written a review, I would like to add this on my blog at a later stage. Some of my problems was that the internet failed me every time I tried to login to Gmail. Also, putting in a URL for my blog was a disadvantage as it kept on informing me it was in the wrong form. Finally, I had trouble trying to upload my article on my blog, but now, this problem has been solved.

The feedback I received was positive. People said it looked very good and quite convincing. It was big and bold and my images were suitable. I needed to range out my colours, as I was told designs usually have 3 main colours and not 2. My colour needs to connote my audience and green wasn’t doing that successfully. My targets is to make sure my double page spread suits my audience, use 3 or more colours and also explain the statistics rather than just having an image by itself.
